Unpaused (film) is the ensemble of five short stories based on loneliness, hope and love. All the five stories are set during the Covid-19 lockdown. The movie is directed by famous directors, Raj & DK, Nikkhil Advani, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Avinash Arun, and Nitya Mehra and led by a talented cast.
The first of the five stories in Unpaused (film) anthropology, Glitch, directed by Raj & DK. Gulshan Devaiah and Saiyami Kher are the main protagonists in the short film. It is already 2030 and no cure of corona has been found, dividing the world into two sects, hypos and warriors. Gulshan Devaiah, a ‘hypo’ gets matched to Saiyami Ker, a ‘warrior’ on a virtual date due to a glitch in the system. The movie explores the idea of a prolonged pandemic where every human being is craving for companionship. Gulshan Devaiah has done a remarkable job with his comic timings making the movie hilarious and fun-filled while giving the important message.
Directed by Nikhil Advani, starring Richa Chadha, Ishwak Singh and Sumeet Vyas, The Apartment stands out from the rest, as it does not directly deal with the pandemic. Devika, played by Richa Chadha, deals with anxiety and depression after sexual assault allegations were cast on her husband. She struggles to keep her mental peace and finds herself ending her life many times, but she has an angel living across from her, who may reignite the spirit of living and fighting in her.
Rat-A-Tat is the story of a 65-year old woman living alone in a building who gets annoyed easily, played by the beautiful and graceful Lillete Dubey and a young girl who has no work for an indefinite period of time due to the pandemic, played by Rinku Rajguru. The arrival of a rat makes these two ladies meet, both filling the void made by loneliness through each other’s presence and finding themselves again in the hard times.
Next is the story of migrant workers, played by Abhishek Banerjee and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan, who are not able to go back to their village due to unavailability of trains, and are homeless and jobless. They temporarily stay in an empty flat, while struggling to find work or the means to back home.
The movie is well directed by Avinash Arun and is beautifully acted out by Abhishek Banerjee and Geetika. The struggles of these workers during the lockdown is vividly shown with many compelling scenes in the short film, the last one precisely grabbing the fear.
Another great addition to the story of love and hope is Chand Mubarak. Directed by Nitya Mehra, it is a story of a single woman, Uma, played by the talented Ratna Pathak Shah, who finds herself struggling during the pandemic due to the strict rules and her illness. She finally meets Rafiq, played by Shardul Bharadwaj, an auto driver who goes out of his way to help the old lady. She finds her solace in the young driver, unravelling the beautiful friendship between two completely different people.
